What types of tax slips will my clients get?

    You can refer to the information below to determine if you can expect a tax slip for your CI Direct Investing account(s) and investment portfolio(s). 


    Investment Accounts

    Account Type
    Is there a tax slip?
    RRSP Yes, if you made a contribution
    You may get a few RRSP Contribution Receipts: one for contributions in the last 10 months of the tax year, and one or more for contributions in the first 60 days of the following year.

    Yes, if you made a withdrawal
    You will get a T4RSP tax slip for any withdrawals made from this account.
    TFSA
    No
    Contributions are not tax-deductible, withdrawals are tax-free, plus investment income is tax-free. Therefore, no tax slips! Another reason to love TFSAs.
    Individual
    Yes, if you earned investment income
    You will get a tax slip for any Individual accounts that earned investment income. Whether you get a T3, T5, or T5013 depends on the portfolio you’re invested in, which is in the Portfolios list below.

    Quebec residents may also receive an RL-16, RL-3, or RL-15.

    Non-residents may also receive an NR4.

    Yes, if investments were sold or contributed to a registered account
    You may receive a T5008 or similar document that will show the proceeds from any deemed dispositions during the tax year.

    CI Direct Investing will also prepare a Statement of Realized Gain and Loss which will include the adjusted cost base (ACB) of any deemed dispositions.
    RESP Yes, if you made a withdrawal
    If you withdrew from your RESP, you will get a T4A tax slip.

    Joint Account

    Yes, if you earned investment income
    You will get a tax slip for any Joint accounts that earned investment income. Whether you get a T3, T5, or T5013 depends on the portfolio you’re invested in, which is in the Portfolios list below.


    Joint account tax slips are usually issued in the name of the first joint holder on file. In their tax return, each joint holder is expected to report their share of the investment income based on their share of contributions.

    Quebec residents may also receive an RL-16, RL-3, or RL-15.

    Non-residents may also receive an NR4.

    Yes, if investments were sold or contributed to a registered account

    LIF Yes, if you made a withdrawal
    You will get a T4RIF tax slip for any withdrawals made from this account.


    Portfolios*

    *Only applies to Individual, Joint, Corporate, and Trust Accounts (i.e. taxable accounts) that earned investment income in the tax year.

    CI Direct Investing Portfolios Which tax slip will I receive?
    High-Interest Savings Account A T3 and/or T5 tax slip.

    Quebec residents may also receive an RL-16 and/or RL-3.

    Non-residents may also receive an NR4.
    ETF Portfolios
    Private Investment Portfolios
    Valet Portfolios
    Essential Portfolios
    A T3 tax slip from each fund.

    Quebec residents may also receive an RL-16.

    Non-residents may also receive an NR4.
    Cleantech Add-on
    A T5 tax slip.

    Quebec residents may also receive an RL-3.
    US ETF Portfolios
    A T5 tax slip.

    Quebec residents may also receive an RL-3.
    Limited Partnership Investments
    (eg. Nicola Real Estate LPs, Nicola Private Equity LP, Nicola Private Debt LP, and other LP investments)
    A T5013 tax slip from each partnership.

    Quebec residents may also receive an RL-15.
